Caring for your sprinkler system

Sprinkler System· Tips and Tricks

19 Jan

The heat is on it’s way Phoenix AZ. With the change in temperature from frost to hot your sprinkler system needs to be maintained. Below is a checklist of items that need attention:

  • Check for waterline breaks, leaky valves, broken drip emitters or broken sprinkler heads. Look at the ground when the system is on for puddles of water, check the valve box for water leaking from the top of the valves, check sprinkler heads for cracks or clogging.
  • Adjust the sprinklers to water the lawn and not the sidewalk, rock or driveway. Turn the heads up or down if they are adjustable to ensure only the grass is getting watered.
  • Adjust the sprinkler/irrigation timer for proper watering times and frequency. We water less frequently in the winter. Desert plants only need water once a week in most cases in the winter. Summer temperatures require quite a bit more watering to keep you plants healthy and blooming throughout the summer.
  • Move the drip line emitters out to the drip line of the trees and shrubs as they grow. Drip lines that remain at the base of the trees will cause the roots of the tree to stay by the trunk. This will eventually cause your trees to fall over in a wind storm. The roots need to travel deep and far out into the ground to support the growth of the tree.
