Getting Bermuda Grass Ready for Summer

Arizona Lawns· Bermuda Grass

21 Apr

In Arizona we have two types of grass, Rye for the winter and Bermuda for the summer.  The Bermuda lawn is a permanent lawn that goes dormant in the winter.  In April, when the evening temperatures are above 65 degrees consistently, it is time to bring your Arizona summer lawn back to life.  First thing to do is mow the grass to 1/2-3/4″.  If you overseeded this past winter with Rye grass, turn your water off for 5 days to stress out the rye grass.  Fertilize the bermuda grass with 21-0-0 and follow the product guidelines.  If you did not overseed you might need to use weed and feed instead to get rid of the weeds and fertilize.  Set your water to once or twice a day for about 5 days and deep water.  Check the water and adjust as needed.  When the grass comes in cut back to normal watering schedule.
