November Plant Guide

Desert Plant Guide· November Plant Guide· Services Offered

19 Oct

Here it is, fall in Arizona. It is time to really enjoy our Arizona weather in the desert and start planting again. This is the time to really plant your trees, shrubs, ground covers, cacti and succulents.

Vines: these will reduce reflected heat from the summer sun and can be grown on a trellis or wall for color. Lower water use vine with flowers include Lilac vine, Primrose Jasmine, Queen’s Wreath, and Yucca Vine. All of these can be sensitive to a hard freeze but will come back if frozen.

Wildflowers: time to sow your seeds for wildflowers if you have not done so already. Finish by mid-November. Keep the soil consistently moist until seedlings reach 1-2″ tall.

Annuals: Sow seeds for Bachelor’s button, Calendula, Larkspur, Poppy and Sweet Peas. You can transplant alyssum, bells of Ireland, dianthus, dusty miller, nasturtium, pansy, primrose, snapdragon, statice, stock, and viola.

Herbs: Sow seeds for cilantro, dill, parsley, oregano, and thyme. Transplant anise, caraway, chamomile, fennel, marjoram, mint, rosemary, sage and salad burnet.

Bulbs: Plant in well drained sil that is rich in organic matter. Mix a phosophorus fertilizer with soil in the bottom of the planting hole.

Ryegrass: Overseed Bermuda lawns with winter ryegrass by mid-November. Water 3-4 times daily for 5-10 minutes each time until the seeds germinate and establish roots.
